What is Therapeutic Riding?

Our focus is not riding or horsemanship! The focus is to use activities involving a horse which requires a person to apply certain skills. It is a powerful and effective approach that has an incredible impact on each and every individual.

Those familiar with horses recognize and understand the power of horses to influence people in powerful ways. Developing relationships, training, horsemanship instruction and caring for the horses naturally affect the people involved. Non-verbal communication, assertiveness, creative thinking and problem-solving, leadership, work, taking responsibility, teamwork and relationships, confidence, and attitude are several examples of the tools utilized and developed.

Horses require work, whether in caring for them or working with them. In an era when immediate gratification and the "easy way" are the norm, horses require the participant to be engaged in physical and mental work to be successful, a valuable characteristic in all aspects of life.

Most importantly, horses have the ability to mirror exactly what human body language is telling them. Many people will complain, "That horse is stubborn, he doesn't like me," but the lesson to be learned is that if they change themselves, the horse will respond differently. Horses are honest, which makes them a powerful messenger.

Specialty Saddle

Stables of Hope has an adult and child's specialty saddle both built the same to give upper support and security that is needed for many disabled participants. Others that have never ridden also have the security of not falling.

The specialty saddles were donated by Dearborn Community Foundation Lawrenceburg Community Grant.
